A 50-year family legacy of service.

Richter Funerals is a family business that was started by the late Conradt Richter in 1981 in King William's Town under the name Richter & Richter Funeral Directors. Having been in the bereavement industry since the late 1960’s, Conradt and his dedicated wife, Eleanor, were able to build a successful family business serving the Border region. After an initial partnership in another business in EL, it was decided to open Richter & Richter East London in 1997.
In 1989 their daughter, Lucille, joined the business and is currently looking after the administration, accounting and funeral insurance. In 1995 her husband, Wayne Banks, joined the team and currently manages the KWT branch.  Shortly thereafter, Paul Richter joined the business, after some years in the insurance and consumer electronics industries, to look after the EL branch.
After Conradt Richter’s sudden death in 2012, Eleanor entrusted Lucille, Paul and Wayne to become her partners in carrying on the legacy that they had built. Says Lucille, "We are very grateful to our parents for all their hard work they put into building up this business. We have loyal staff who have been with us for many years."
Richter Funerals is focused on taking the stress out of a difficult time by handling funeral and cremation arrangements in a dignified and compassionate manner. The business has always been based on strong ethical values, catering for the richly diverse cultures and traditions of the community in the region. Paul Richter, “We are an independent, family-owned business. It was always important to Dad that we operate independently so we are able to offer a personal hands-on approach. The funeral profession is not a job, it’s a calling. When a loved one passes away, most families don’t know what to do. We train our staff to treat everyone as if it was their family member who passed away.”
In addition to funeral and cremation services, Richter Funerals also offers related products and specialist services such as funeral policies, in-house floral arrangements, wreaths, tombstones, exhumation, local and international repatriation.
